Math
The Common Core State Standards state that by the end of 3rd grade, students: will have developed fluency with efficient procedures for multiplying whole numbers. To be efficient with multiplication, students MUST be able to recite the multiplication facts through 12 quickly and accurately. Students who know their multiplication facts will be more successful.
Some critical areas of learning in the 5th grade are: understand the place value system and add, subtract, multiply, and divide whole numbers, decimals, and fractions. Calculators are not allowed in the 5th grade. Students will not have access to calculators during instruction, multiple iReady diagnostics or their standardized test during the 2017-18 school year.
Students will be required to take a Multiplication Fluency Test during the first two weeks of school to “jump start” progress. This grade will be recorded.
We encourage families to create a Zearn account to begin working on the standards. Parents can visit the website https://www.zearn.org/users/sign_up to sign your student up.
